5 weeks, 4 days

The baby is starting to grow arms & is about 1/4 inch long.

I have my own business. I make widgets and sell them on the internet. I also have a 5yo. So I'm busy. And I'm behind, trying to catch up this week. I'm coming to realize that I can't post every detail every day, but I'll do what I can.

This weekend was awful for my diet (and by diet I mean "what I'm eating" not "trying to lose weight"). We went to visit family and for all of Saturday and half of Sunday there was nothing that wasn't made with animal protein. I did the best I could. Monday morning, my bp was up to 136/80.

But since we've been home, I've been the model nutritarian. Here are my stats for this morning:

260.4 pounds
120/68 = blood pressure at 7:18am
69 = heart rate

I'd love to see my bp in perfect range (less than 118/80) first thing in the morning and less than 120/80 in the afternoons. So far if I've checked in the afternoons it's in the 130-145 range/80. Not good. And my first doctor's appointment is at 2pm, so I assume if it were today it would be elevated. I've got until next Tuesday, so we'll see what I can do between now and then.

On my plate today will be smoothie with kale, big lunch salad, and leftover Tamale Casserole from the Happy Herbivore cookbook. That's a good recipe, but I just used salt-free canned tomatoes instead of salsa (couldn't find low/no-salt salsa at the grocery on Monday) and reduced the salt in the cornbread topping to 1/4 tsp. It was still tasty and I'd definitely make it again.

4 weeks, 6 days

Today the baby is just beginning to form his/her brain and backbone.

So today, here are my stats:

262 pounds
125/76 = blood pressure at 7am
83 = heart rate

& here's what I'm eating:

Breakfast: steel cut oats, plus a little brown sugar, cinnamon, raspberries, ground flaxseed, vanilla almond milk

Lunch: giant salad - romaine, butter lettuce, spinach, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, bell pepper, cauliflower, sugar snap peas, grapes, 1/2 can of black beans, onion slices. Plus a dressing I made yesterday with tahini, lemon juice, garlic, & water.

Dinner: the Ginger Bok Choy with Soba Noodles recipe from Appetite for Reduction.

I'm planning to walk up and down my stairs for some exercise as soon as I get done with my post. We used to have a treadmill but it broke. And it's too dang hot where I live to exercise outside. But we live in a split level and we have stairs. So I'm going to walk them with my 5-year-old starting once a day and work up from there. Before I started eating a plant-based diet (about 6 weeks ago), my entire body hurt and I couldn't even begin to think of climbing stairs to exercise. Now I'd say about half my body hurts. Ha. And today I'm going to see how many times I can climb the stairs before I feel like I need to quit. My eventual goal is to do it 3x/day, for 10 minutes each time.

I'm not having any cravings, only the mildest nausea. Things are good!

Tomorrow we're going out of town for the weekend. I have no idea what I'll be eating, but I will do the best that I can.

Hello

Ooh, I hate first blog posts. Feels stilted. So here's the gist:

I'm 41, pregnant for the 2nd time, I weighed 262 pounds this morning. This morning at 7am, my blood pressure was 125/76. This is too high. With my last pregnancy, 6 years ago, I had pregnancy induced hypertension. I ended up being on bed rest, then being induced, then having a c-section anyway. I also started my pregnancy weighing 12 pounds less.

My goal is to lose more weight if I can, but definitely to avoid gaining a lot of weight (I gained about 40 pounds last time). My other goal is to get my blood pressure under control and avoid drugs (which I did not have to take last time, but my bp was relatively normal until midway through).

I'm going with a plant-based diet. Plant strong, that's me. I'm following the diet in Eat to Live, by Dr. Joel Furhman and adding 2oz of nuts daily, plus the occasional bit of avocado for healthy fats. I am avoiding sugar, caffeine, salt, animal products.

I realize that I could just do this and the story would play out however it will. But I've been looking online for someone who has already been through what I'm going through - over 40, overweight, trying a plant-based diet to avoid pregnancy complications and to get healthier. I can't find her.

So I will become her.

I will write my story here. I'll give my stats, info on what I'm eating, and resources that I find, etc.

I expect that some people may find this and not understand. They might tell me that the baby needs meat. This is not true. If you believe that and want to bring me your negative energy, please read Eat to Live and The China Study and then get back with me. ;)
